Alain Ducasse is the chef with the most Michelin stars in the world with a total of 20 stars (see below for the full list of his starred restaurants). French-born in 1956 on a farm in the Landes region, Ducasse developed a taste for locally grown produce from a very young age.

After earning a vocational diploma in hotel management from North Oxon Technical College in 1987, he moved to London and began honing his culinary skills under chef Marco Pierre White at the restaurant Harvey's and under chef Albert Roux at La Gavroche.
In 1994, a 32-year-old Marco Pierre White became the youngest chef to achieve three stars at his eponymous restaurant. By 1999, he'd renounced the stars, quitting the restaurant that had made him a culinary star.
Michelin stars are awarded based on creativity, value, quality, skill, and consistency. Any single element of that grading criteria that is compromised can cause a restaurant to lose a star and not even celebrity chefs are safe from this.

White also once made a young Gordon Ramsay cry while Ramsay worked for him, and later said, "I don't recall what he'd done wrong but I yelled at him and he lost it. Gordon crouched down in the corner of the kitchen, buried his head in his hands and started sobbing."
A restaurant can be rated from 0-3 stars, and there is also a 'Bib Gourmand' award for restaurants offering quality food at a reasonable price. Michelin stars are awarded to restaurants, rather than to individual chefs, so chefs who run more than one establishment can hold more than three stars.
Michelin stars are given out on a scale of one to three stars, with only the top establishments in the world qualifying. To earn one Michelin star, a restaurant needs to be “a very good restaurant in this category”. For two stars, it needs to be “excellent cooking, worth a detour”.
Mashed stated the reason he lost the Michelin stars is that "his dishes weren't consistent." His Gordon Ramsay eatery in London is the only restaurant in history to lose two Michelin stars at once, but much of that is attributed to the fact that the chef wasn't active in the day-to-day operations of the business.
